Suffering from tooth pain or sensitivity? Your root canal system could be damaged.
Your root canal system is the living tissue inside every one of your teeth. And over time, this tissue can become infected, injured or in some cases, die. This requires the damaged tissue to be removed from the tooth and replaced by materials that protect your teeth from reoccurring damage.
In most cases, root canal treatments are successful at stopping the damage and allow the patient to keep the affected tooth— this prevents any shifting of your teeth. But sometimes, a tooth is so damaged that it has to be extracted.
Your dentist or hygienist might recommend a root canal if:
- Your tooth decay has reached the pulp level
- The inside your tooth is affected by infection
- You’ve suffered any trauma to your teeth
To prevent the need for a root canal treatment, we recommend looking for the following symptoms when brushing, flossing and eating.
- Tooth pain
- Discoloration in your teeth
- Tooth sensitivity
- Swelling or irritation in the gums
While these are all symptoms of a damaged root canal system, they can also be signs and symptoms of other dental infections that require a different type of treatment or attention as well. If you find yourself suffering from any of these symptoms, we strongly recommend scheduling an appointment immediately to prevent any further damage.
